Product Details

Enjoy a trip back in time with the Westover family of Harmony Street! This two book series (for now!), The House on Harmony Street and In the Family Way, will immerse you in the 19th century world, and The Victorian Home will give insights into the everyday homes of Victorian America.

The House on Harmony Street

“Do you mean you will accept the position?” he asked hopefully.

“Yes, of course. When can I start?”

His face lit up. “That’s good news! As soon as you like. Today isn’t too early for me, if I only thought we could make that bedroom presentable for you.”

“I’m afraid that’s a little soon for me,” said Margaret, smiling. “I still need to pack up and settle with my landlady. Tomorrow? I can come about nine and get settled in, if you don’t mind a simple dinner.”

“We’ve had so many failed dinners lately, I’m sure the simplest of meals would satisfy us,” Dane answered with a chuckle. “All right, let’s draw up the contract.”

Thus begins Margaret Sullivan's new role as housekeeper of the large and busy Westover household. After a sedate life with an elderly widow, Margaret finds the Westovers' liveliness and laughter a refreshing change. But it takes a troubling chain of events which threaten the peace and happiness of the whole family to make Margaret realize that she has become much more than a housekeeper to them - and perhaps the very person to keep the house on Harmony Street in tune.

Paperback. 312 pages.

In the Family Way

“Uncle Dane,” Robert spoke up suddenly, polishing his plate with his slice of bread-and-butter, “what does 'fill the nursery' mean?”
Silence reigned for a long moment. Irresistibly, Dane and Margaret’s eyes were drawn to each other, and they exchanged a smile across the table. Dane saw Shem’s brows rise as he looked from one to the other.
“Ahem,” said Dane. “It means, er, to be ‘in the family way’.”
Robert looked blank.
“Have a baby,” whispered Aaron helpfully.
“Oh!” said Robert.
“But we haven’t got a nursery,” Molly observed, round-eyed.
Fanny turned to her with a big-sisterly air. “We don’t need one,” she informed her. “We haven’t got a baby.”

The Westovers are back! For Dane and Margaret's lively household of brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, the summer of 1891 is a busy one. With Dane now sheriff of two communities, his days are already full; but he and his deputies - his brothers Shem and David - are stretched even thinner by challenges at home, needy townsfolk, and a string of mysterious railroad robberies. Soon every member of the house on Harmony Street must join in to help - in the family way.

Home Fires

“Will he call Uncle Dane Papa?” Molly said suddenly.

Margaret, a little startled by the question, glanced at the little girl’s pensive face. “Well, yes,” she answered. “Uncle Dane is his papa, you know.”

“We don’t have a papa,” Molly responded quietly.

“Yes, we do,” Fanny put in from the sofa. Her blue eyes were round and a little indignant. “We have Uncle Dane!”

Molly stroked Daniel’s back without looking up. “He’s like a papa, but we don’t call him Papa.”

“It doesn’t matter what you call a person,” Aaron spoke up unexpectedly. “Uncle Dane is just as much our father as...as anybody’s father!”

Margaret’s eyes lifted to find Dane standing in the doorway, unobserved by the children. He was listening closely, nothing but love and concern on his face.

New Year's Day, 1892, marks the start of a cozy winter for the house at 25 Harmony Street, where local sheriff Dane Westover and his wife Margaret are raising their big, chaotic family. But while the Westovers are making friends with their charming new neighbors, the recently hired schoolteacher lights flames of controversy throughout the town. When a desperate and needy thief begins to affect the lives of people in both Camden and Bordenville, Dane and his brothers must call up all their courage and skill to keep their family safe and the home fires burning.

The Victorian Home

Author and historian Sarah Brazytis leads a tour of the Victorian home, exploring each room for the overlooked and forgotten items that 19th century housewives relied on to 'keep house'. Take the tour, use the thorough index for reference, and test your memory on a bank of detailed drawings by illustrator Ruth Brazytis - and then read and write with confidence and knowledge of the Victorian Home.
